OPENING DOORS TO TRADES
Over two awesome days, our first Try-a-Trade workshop brought together First Nations young people to explore hands-on career pathways in the trades. The workshop provided a culturally safe and supportive environment where participants could step outside their comfort zones, build confidence, and develop practical skills across three key trades: bricklaying, painting, and carpentry. The sessions were guided by First Nations tradespeople who are qualified professionals, thriving in their field.
Participants on the day learned foundational skills, including bricklaying techniques, surface preparation and finishing in painting, and measuring, cutting, and assembling materials in carpentry — all while building confidence in using tools safely.
Beyond the skills, the program created space for young people to see themselves in industries where they have been underrepresented, supported by mentors and role models who brought these pathways to life.
One participant shared she could see herself becoming a bricklayer and has since connected with Brick and Block Careers to explore a school-based apprenticeship — an example of real pathways and opportunities being created.
Participants left with a strong sense of achievement, increased confidence, and clearer direction for a future in trades. These workshops also strengthen community, fostering connection and collaboration between First Nations and non-First Nations organisations, businesses, employment organisations, schools and potential employers.
By investing in our young people, we help build a stronger, more inclusive workforce.
