Building Skills at the Top of Australia

We are in Bamaga! If Australia were a house, we'd be standing on the roof. 😊

Bamaga is about as far north as you can go on Australia's east coast without getting your feet wet.

Indigenous Women in Trades was proud to partner with the Northern Peninsula Area Regional Council and Bamaga State College to provide four local students with a hands-on work experience opportunity.

The students recently rolled up their sleeves to help give the Hunter Fitness Centre a fresh new look, painting the external walls and doors with plenty of energy and teamwork. Under the guidance of Indigenous Women in Trades Founder and Barama Group Director, Irene Stanley, who generously volunteered her time, the students gained hands-on experience in surface preparation, workplace health and safety (WHS), using painting tools and equipment, and painting techniques such as cutting in and applying quality finishes.

The project gave the students a real taste of working in the trades while building confidence, practical skills and experience in a supportive environment. It was wonderful to see their enthusiasm and willingness to learn, with several students expressing interest in pursuing a career in painting and construction.

We are incredibly proud of what they achieved and grateful to everyone who helped make the opportunity possible.

A special thank you to HC Constructions for generously supplying the paint, and to our partners at Northern Peninsula Area Regional Council and Bamaga State College for supporting local young people to explore pathways into the trades.
